“Taking Aubrey's Homeschool of the Redwoods course really helped me understand the concept of Montessori in the home in a realistic and practical way. I finished the course truly understanding how to put the Montessori method in practice with my 4 year old and preparing myself to introduce the methods to my almost 2 year old when the time comes.”

What Life Looks Like with a Homeschool of the Redwoods: Primary Foundation

You may or may not have slept well the night before, but as you make yourself a hot cup of coffee and lean into your day, you’re checking in on your lesson plans. Planning has become more of a hobby for you than a job, and you enjoy it!

Having observed and assessed your child’s readiness for certain skills, you already know more or less where you’re headed. You make some notes, and greet your child - and the day - with love and enthusiasm for life-long learning.

Our program emphasizes a relaxed approach to homeschooling. Much of your day is spent hanging out with your child in unstructured play. You’re going outdoors for nature walks and to playgrounds. You’re cooking together in the kitchen. You’re counting nearly everything out loud - and adding and multiplying objects when you see learning opportunities!

Maybe you have a friend over and you and the other parent chat about life while your little ones play together. Later, you snuggle on the couch. You read stories and dance and sing.

And in the mix… there are lessons. Why? Because children learn from modeling and you are giving lessons on all the different subject areas! You’re demonstrating how to fold laundry, how to pour milk into cereal without spilling, how to read the sounds that spell c-a-t, how to find Africa on the map, and what to call the parts of a tree.

Take a Peek!

Homeschool of the Redwoods includes over 700 lessons and activities across eight subject area. All lessons are leveled and sequenced and available in easy to print and use guides. In addition to lessons, the guides also include supply lists and book recommendations.

Take a peek inside the first few pages of the Sensorial guide to see how it works!

These lessons are all listed in your Homeschool of the Redwoods Lessons & Activities Guides, and you use the guides to guide you and your child. The lessons don’t actually take much time, but you find that the more activities you do, the more fun you have!

By the time you put your child to bed that night, you realize that even though not everything went as planned, both of you learned something new about the world.

Does this Lifestyle Speak to You?

Homeschool of the Redwoods: Primary can help you make it a reality. Our program is specifically for families who believe in a child-directed approach to learning. We don’t march children through a set of tasks (although we have checklists to keep ourselves organized!). Instead, we follow the child through their natural developmental stages.

We trust that our children are already equipped with a natural inclination toward learning, and we assume that we will be able to engage them with silly games and sensorial experiences that stoke their curiosity.

We believe that every child can reach their fullest potential if given the opportunity - and a gentle, loving parent to guide them.
A Joyful Learning Journey

In the Homeschool of the Redwoods: Primary program, you’ll get lifetime access to the eight core subject areas you’ll need to teach your child.

This includes the two cornerstone Primary areas — Practical Life and Sensorial — as well as Reading & Writing, Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science, Humankind, and the Arts.

It’s a comprehensive curriculum for your two-, three-, four-, and five-year-old. (Once your child is age 6 — or in 1st grade — our Lower Elementary program is a better fit.)

But unlike other homeschool curricula, which tend to focus solely on academic learning, our method truly serves the whole child. We want to raise children who are kind, compassionate, well-spoken, self-aware, and gracious.

But we also want to raise children who have a solid foundation of practical skills and are infinitely curious about their world!

How do you teach all this?

By building layers of knowledge and skills based on sensory-first approach to learning. We engage their minds by engaging their bodies! Our lessons are playful and creative. We combine repetition of skill with joy.

With Child of the Redwoods, a Homeschool Education Is…

You’ll be invited to join the Homeschool of the Redwoods Community right away, where you’ll get support from other course members and alumni. Your access begins as soon as you enroll and runs for one year!

Wait. Isn't Montessori Expensive?

It’s true. Some Montessori materials can be pricy. But they’re also often designed to be used by countless children in a classroom for years and years. Industrial-strength durability matters!

But guess what? Homeschoolers get to choose how much they spend on educational supplies. At Child of the Redwoods, we personally love (and LIVE BY) a scrappy, DIY approach to Montessori! We firmly believe everyone should have access to this incredible teaching method, so we’ve designed our programs specifically for non-professional teachers, including an emphasis on cost-saving home budgets.

It’s authentic Montessori for real, working families.

How do we do it? Foremost, we follow Maria Montessori’s own guidance — the magic is not in the materials; it’s in the method! A fancy — and expensive — set of store bought golden beads can be pretty, but you can teach the same concepts with an inexpensive homemade set. Learn the method and lessons, and the world opens to you!

But more than that, we’ve carefully modified the lessons for home learners working on a budget. That’s why most of our lessons and activities just require you, your child, and household objects or basic art supplies — things like scissors, construction paper, glue, colored pencils, markers, items gathered in nature (like stones or acorns), and popsicle sticks.

There are some classic materials you may want to invest in, but that’s totally your choice. To help you decide, we include a detailed supply list for each subject area so you decide what to make, skip, or buy.

Nine Amazing Areas

We spent years designing the Primary program to ensure it presents the needed depth and scope of material in easy to understand and implement format.

Each unit explores one or more of the incredible academic areas through instructional and demo videos, Learning Journals, Lessons & Activities Guides, and Planning and Observation Guides. In addition, you’ll take a deep dive into how to plan your own homeschool rhythm and routine. You have LIFETIME access to all of this content!

Sensorial

Those little precious hands keep reaching out to feel textures and bring things to the eyes for inspection, to the mouth for tasting, to the nose for smelling, and to the ears for listening. The world has so much to offer, and you’ll know how to isolate each one into fun, engaging lessons that refine the senses.

Practical Life

Imagine that your sweet child grows up to be an adult. It’ll happen someday! What are the basic life skills you would like for them to feel competent in? From folding clothes to pouring liquid without spilling, the learning starts now. Bonus — these practical skills set the stage for academic success! We’ll show you how.

The Arts

Dancing, singing, painting, drawing, and more! Your songbird will flourish as you enjoy music-making together with instruments you make yourself, starting with the rhythm we have in our own bodies. Your creative artist will enjoy learning to use scissors, apply glue, and appreciate the artwork of others.

Reading & Writing

Teaching your child to read and write is easier than you think! There is a clear method in Montessori to literacy. First, we’ll spend some time building phonological skills, and then we’ll use a movable alphabet to launch your pre-reader into a full-fledged reader.

Mathematics

Your little one is probably already aware of numbers and maybe even starting to count out loud. How do we get from here to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division? There is a beautiful sequence we follow using some of Montessori’s most brilliant materials. You’ll teach math with confidence!

Humankind

Head, shoulders, knees, and toes! From exploring our own bodies to identifying with our family and larger community, there is so much to learn about what it means to be human, including how to see oneself as a peacemaker.

Physical Science

No doubt, your child already has some experience with physical science; that’s what all the bathtub water play and sandbox sifting is all about. What comes next? Learning about the land we live on — the air we breathe — and the water that makes up 2/3 of our planet through fun experiments!

Life Science

One of your child’s first interests was likely animals; cows go moo, sheep go baa, kitties go meow. Now we take it up a notch! Cows have identifiable body parts. They live on many continents around the world. They are mammals. That’s zoology. How about the carrots and broccoli on your plate? They’re roots and flowers! Your child will delight in the mysterious yet classifiable nature of life.

Rhythm & Routine

In addition to the eight subject areas, the course includes a special unit focused entirely on helping you design the right Rhythm and Routine for your child. You’ll learn the characteristics of the toddler, preschool, and kindergarten-aged child and get familiar with the ways to document and plan your days.

Take a Peek!

In addition to the lessons, Homeschool of the Redwoods includes easy to use Planning and Documentation guides for each of the eight subject area. These guides make it easier for you to keep track of your child's progress and plan out a rich and exciting learning experience.

A Journey We Take Together!

Welcome, friend! My name is Aubrey. I’m a mom of two and a real-life, full-time homeschooler. I also have a Master’s in Curriculum & Instruction and 20 years teaching experience. I’ve taught adults and kids, taught in public schools, private schools, and in the home.

I’m Montessori certified for both toddlers (NAMC) and Lower Elementary (AMS) with years of teaching early childhood in the classroom and my own young children at home. I’m also the author of two books on child development.

I loved teaching in the classroom, but when it came time to make the educational choice for my own children, something in my heart said, “keep them at home!”

And when I combined the Montessori curriculum I knew and loved with a relaxed, spontaneous approach to homeschooling, I knew I had hit on something special.

From cooking in the kitchen to spending time in nature, these Montessori lessons could be taught anywhere!

For decades, the Montessori method has been behind a wall of exclusivity. Well, this experienced teacher-turned-homeschooler says: NO MORE. Never before has there been such a need for parents to have access to the incredible method of teaching that Maria Montessori designed. No longer will it be “Montessori private school or no Montessori at all”.

Homeschoolers all over the world deserve to have an affordable, accessible Montessori education to give to their children, taught BY homeschoolers, and it brings me such joy to share my knowledge and expertise with anyone who wants to learn.

I hope you will consider joining this special program. I can’t wait to meet you and learn about your family’s needs.
